How To Find People on Twitter
Searching for People on Twitter
Twitter is the latest, greatest social networking website, so figuring out how to find people on Twitter is one of the way online searchers keep up with the times. Twitter is meant to let you find people with similar interests and keep in contact with them through short, pithy posts. For that reason, using Twitter to find people should be easy.
I’ve found easier ways to social network than Twitter if I’m trying to find a specific person, but Twitter is great for meeting new friends with similar interests. Since most people reading this blog are looking to find specific people and information and are less interested in serendipity, I’ve decided to give a guide for finding people on Twitter, along with a general Twitter guide.
We’ll start with some of the basic terms on Twitter. There are frankly about a thousand of these, but most aren’t essential for tweeters and most are frankly what I call “cutesy”, which in my parlance translates to “annoying”. Here are some essential Twitter terms, along with an example or two of non-essential Twitter terms. The latter should give you an idea how to decipher all the rest.
Twitter Terms
- Tweet – Tweeting – The act of posting on Twitter.
- Tweets – Posts on Twitter.
- Tweeter – A Twitter user.
- Twitter Stream – Collection of tweets, usually in alphabetical order.
- Twitterer – Another word for Tweeter; less common.
- Twitterati – The best tweeters.
- Neweeter – A new tweeter.
- Politweet – A political tweet.
Searching Twitter – Register an Account
To begin searching on Twitter, you’ll need to create an account. Otherwise, most functions don’t work on Twitter. Remember to save your log-in information and password, because Twitter tend to ask you for your registration info a lot. If you don’t have it handy, you’re likely to get frustrated quickly.
The process of Twitter registration is quick and easy, though. I like their suggested people to follow, which is random, but based on your general interests. I clicked on about half of the ones suggested to me.
Log In on Twitter – Go to Your Twitter Profile Page
Now that you have your account, login to Twitter and go to your profile page. This is where you’ll want to begin your Twitter people search.
Click on “Find People”
“Find People” can be found in blue letters on the top toolbar of your Twitter profile page. Click on this link and follow the link to the Twitter People Finder.
Once in, enter the full name of the person you are searching for. You’ll need both first and last names. There are a lot of people on Twitter these days, so the more you can narrow your search down, the quicker your Twitter search will go and the better it will be for you.
Remember to correctly spell the name you’re searching for or else your search is going to be way off. Once you use the Twitter people finder, a list of potential names corresponding to the information you entered should appear. Click on their profile links to find the person you’re searching for.
Find Tweeters Using your Email Contacts
Most of the big name email services these days let you search for people on Twitter using an email contact list. Whether you use Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, Yahoo Email or MSN/Bing Email, you should be able to use your contact list to find people on Twitter.
There should be a “Find on Other Networks” link to click on. Click this link on your email page and respond with “Twitter” when prompted.
Twitter Suggested Users
Twitter also has a function on their website called “Suggested Users“. Twitter uses your profile information to build a list of suggested friends on Twitter. This is found near the Find People box we discussed earlier. Click on the Suggested Users link and see whom Twitter is suggest you follow. Generally, these names will be celebrities or notables.
That’s pretty much how to find people on Twitter. The process gets easier all the time, as more people get on Twitter and more Tweeters make suggestions for improvements. Twitter may not be the easiest social networking website to use to find people online, but it isn’t the worst, either.
