Why Hire a Private Investigator?

The term ‘private investigator’ is synonymous with characters such as Sherlock Holmes and more contemporary figures including Veronica Mars and Adrian Monk. However, whilst their fictional antics include near death experiences and disputes with invariably incompetent police forces, the reality is often hugely removed from this.

Rather than car chases and back alley fights with the henchmen of local mob bosses, the bread and butter work of a P.I is more grounded in business and legal disputes. This makes them a useful resource for a broad range of potential employers. For example, insurance companies can benefit hugely from P.I’s, especially in the civil divisions of the law. Suspicious insurance claims are often found to be bogus by shrewd investigators, saving insurers from the cost and irritation of fraudsters.

Contrary to public perceptions, P.I’s also indulge in more litigious affairs such as the delivery of subpoenas and summons, and can be utilised for a variety of tasks. Investigators also indulge in more direct forms of research within judicial realms, including interviews with suspects and witnesses. The hiring of a private investigator is a worthwhile expense if it culminates in a legal victory.

Many P.I’s also possess access to record sources that are unavailable to the general public. Whilst your average citizen has access to a number of databases, P.I’s are often capable of tracing tax records, court records, voter registrations and real estate transactions. This is potentially vital information, especially for prospective employers and businesses. Furthermore, P.I’s may also be able to obtain DMV records, business licenses and information surrounding births and deaths.

A further speciality of P.I’s is surveillance, and if necessary counter-surveillance. Any budding mavericks out there planning to track down a target or unveil a mystery would be welcome to do so; but unfortunately, the reality of partaking in such an action doesn’t really equate to the Hollywood image of a thrilling stakeout. This is where the employment of a P.I becomes a worthwhile expenditure.

Most P.I’s worth their salt will track a target for hours on end, without breaks or lapses of attention. This undertaking is something that the general public simply lacks the time and concentration to carry out effectively. Furthermore, following a subject without ‘losing them’ or being spotted requires a fair degree of skill and experience.

Surveillance is a powerful tool for businesses in particular. Anyone chasing absconding debtors or wishing to ensure that a patent isn’t being breached may wish to track down the individuals responsible. On the subject of counter surveillance, investigators often have a knack for uncovering bugging devices within boardrooms or other departments of a small trader or larger corporation. Counter surveillance could save a business from the theft of intellectual property and effectively save unquestionably large quantities of money. Other corporate functions of P.I’s include anti-piracy operations, copyright infringement enquiries and due diligence investigations.

Background checks are another function of the private investigator. If you’re an employer you may be intrigued to know about potential employees or current personnel. Private investigators can inform employers about the backgrounds of selected members of the public, which may be a valid pursuit under certain circumstances. People are often unwilling to disclose information about criminal convictions and negative aspects of their lives, so the P.I may once more be a sound investment.

Should you find yourself in uncertain circumstances in your personal life, you may be relieved to know that many P.I’s will be more than willing to assist in the collection of evidence against unfaithful or otherwise misbehaving spouses also. This of course, can be used as evidence surrounding battles for child custody, property disputes or alimony. Many P.I’s actually earn the bulk of their earnings through this branch of work, so are likely to be sufficiently experienced to carry out investigations on your behalf.

Ultimately, I hope for your sake that you don’t require the services of a P.I for personal reasons, yet it helps to be aware of the multiple advantages of utilising their services. Whilst the standard modern day P.I will probably lack the extreme dynamism and boldness of their fictional counterparts, it’s worth bearing in mind what they could do for you, especially if you manage or own a business.
