How to Get a Free Criminal Background Check

Do Your Own Criminal Background Check

Are you hiring someone to be around your family and do you want to know how to get a free criminal background check? Is there a new person in your life who is going to be alone around your children?

If you need to do a criminal history search on somebody, but you don’t want to spend money or you don’t know how to do online searches, just keep reading, because here’s how to do your own online background check.

Whose Background Should You Research?

There are a whole lot of reasons you might want to be researching your acquaintances. Below is a list of people you should consider searching, if they are involved in the lives of you and your family. These might be friends, neighbors, employees or business partners.

  • Babysitter
  • Nanny
  • School Teacher
  • Bus Driver
  • School Janitor
  • Cleaning Lady
  • Electrician
  • Plumber
  • Locksmith
  • Landscaper
  • Next-Door Neighbor
  • New Acquaintances
  • Childrens Friends
  • Your Hedge Fund Manager
  • Your Fellow Shareholders
  • The People You’re Hiring

The fact of the matter is, you never know when a new person in your life has a seedy past; you really can never be certain. Even a good background search isn’t going to account for somone who has moved across the country and changed their name.

But if you want to put the odds in your favor of knowing whether a criminal is interacting with your loved ones, learn how to obtain a free background check by doing your own Internet research. Checking about someone on your pc or laptop isn’t as hard as it sounds.

Criminal Searches

Go to Criminal Search and put in the correct information in the right box. All the information you need is a first name, last name and the state you want to search in. You’ll be able to do a free criminal history check on people using that name in your state.

Also listed on Criminal Searches are resources like criminal statistics, alerts, neighborhood watch information and a sex offended finder. The advanced search option lets you enter first, middle and last names, full address information (complete with city, state and zip code), the date of birth, age range and even the offense types you’re wanting to search.

Make Certain It’s Them

There are a lot of people in the world with the same name. For instance, if you live in Florida and your girl’s soccer coach is named “Mark Jones” and you decide to do a criminal search on him, you would put into the system “Mark”, “Jones” and “Florida”.

There are going to be a lot of Mark Joneses in Florida. Even if you learn there’s a criminal named Mark Jones in Broward County, there’s still likely to be a lot of people going by that name. Narrow it down to Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and you still might have a different person.

So if something comes back suspicious, that’s when you need to begin to double-check and dig deeper. Look at our section on “Criminal Records” or “Background Checks” to get more ideas. Or just go to “All About Criminal Background Checks” for directions to more information on how to get a free criminal background check.

Of course, if this person has a rare or idiosyncratic name, you might not have to search that far. For instance, if this hypothetical soccer coach is named “Monty LeFlume”, you’re probably on pretty stable ground assuming it’s the same guy.
