England Ancestry Records

England Genealogy Records

England ancestry records are easy to find, because the English have had nearly 1,000 years of unbroken civilization, free from conquest and foreign occupation. Though many Catholic ancestry records were lost in the changeover from Catholic to Protestant in the 16th century, most genealogy records remain from centuries back.

Many Americans and Canadians seeking their family history are lucky to have distant relatives who lived in what is now the United Kingdom of England and Wales.

Finding England’s ancestry records online is more a matter of choosing a website you can trust to give you good genealogical information, because there are so many different ancestry sites on the Internet. Most of the family bloodline information you can find for free, especially in certains eras of English history.

UK National Archives

For instance, the U.K.’s national archives has posted online the census records for England and Wales from 1841 to 1911. Since most people know their family history stretching back to the time of the grandparents and great-grandparents (the early 20th century), these are exactly the type of files you’ll be searching for.

Besides the English national archives, you’ll find all kinds of free genealogy information from the British Isles.

Genealogy Links

One source is Genealogylinks.net, which offers linkes to sources of ancestry information through England. There are links for cemetaries and censuses, marriage licenses and military service records. For those trying to find the link between their English heritage and family members immigrating to North America, there are passenger lists and crew lists for ship bookings across the Atlantic Ocean.

There are even links to 10 different history and genealogical societies found throughout England and Ireland, including English genealogical societies you wouldn’t immediately associate with England, such as Quaker family records, Anglo-Italian family records and Huguenot family records.

There are also links to England’s genealogy records for 43 different British counties, including the Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight. You can search online through for many of the family records you might normally expect to have to look for in person in those regions.

UK Genealogy

UKgenealogy.co.uk also has census records from the same years as the National Archives, in case you have trouble finding or navigating the English National Archives site. UK Genealogy offers links to similar organizations which can help you in your search, like the Society of Genealogists and the Federation of Family History Societies.

You can get on the site’s mailing list, learn about heraldic studies or find a link to an online British newspaper library. Once again, people searching for England ancestry records can look up family history through each county’s link.

Census Finder

Censusfinder.com not only has English census records for the 19th century, but offers records dating back all the way to the 1600s. Census Finder has a link to the Baptist ministers of three British counties, who can help you find ancestry information for the period ranging from 1790 to 1831 in those regions (Northamptonshire, Huntingdonshire and Bedfordshire).
