Criminal Background Checks

All About Criminal Background Checks

Occasionally here on the records and backgrounds blog, I decide to direct our readers to a number of blog posts on a related subject. Since it’s Friday, I thought I would silo a bunch of links to blog posts on the general subject of “Criminal Background Checks”.

We’ve tried to cover criminal background checks from any number of angles, from middle management wanting to perform background checks on potential employees, to concerned parents wanting to know what kind of person is driving their kids’ bus to school in the morning, to a regular guy with a few legal problems in the past, who’s concerned what exactly is going to show up on their background search.

No one person is probably going to find all of these articles useful, but just about everyone is going to find a topic or background check tips that apply to them. So happy searching and I hope everything checks out for you in your life.

Criminal Background Check How-To Articles

These four “how to” posts tell you how to perform some function or other involved with the subject of checking backgrounds and amateur private investigation: looking up public records, doing your own background check, finding out if someone has a police record and checking a driving record.

Background Checks General Information

These offer pretty basic information for someone wanting to perform a background check on someone else. One involves comparison shopping for paid background check services, one involves information on ignoring those services and performing your own background search, and one simply discusses why you should behave yourself and not post crazy stuff online, lest you provide ammunition friends, authorities and potential employers can hold against you.

Background Checks – Services – I posted the other day a review of background records services, which I’m generally hesitant to do, since I don’t want to appear to be shilling for anyone. These are the big companies you’ve heard of already, so it probably doesn’t hurt posting what they charge for each service, and comparing them against one another.

Free Public Access to Criminal Records – If you want to perform free criminal record searches on your own, this page is a good resource for getting access to criminal records at the city, state and federal level. There’s a lot of free public information on the Internet, but knowing where to look can be a real pain sometimes. If you have no idea where to start, then start here.

Background Record Checks – This one reads a bit of a rant about invasion of privacy, though I really wanted to talk about one of my favorite old movies and how it applies to the immanence of background information in this, the Information Age. I guess the mood strikes me sometimes. As it is, you might find something useful in my little screed about background record checks.

Here’s information on how to expunge your record, when some bureaucratic error is sullying your good name.

Business Background Checks

Generally speaking, doing an informal background check on a local company or small business isn’t going to turn up a criminal record, but I wanted to include the two of these on the list. Fraud and other illegal business practices can creep into your business partnerships and customer/client relationships, so I wanted you to be armed with the ability to do your due diligance, when it comes time to do business.

How to Investigate a Small Business – Many small businesses that are run as limited liability companies (LLC’s) are pretty much the private enterprise of a single owner, so checking on the background of a man’s LLC or private business is often akin to checking on his background. Here’s how you research a small business you’ve considered building a commercial relationship with.

How Does a Business Background Check Work? – Checking out a business to see whether it’s legitimate is perfectly reasonable, especially if you are about to become partners with them or you’re about to become a client, either as a supplier or a customer.
