Background Screening Checks
Screening Applicant Backgrounds
In several of my recent posts about background screening checks, there were one or two points that I didn’t make or wanted to reiterate about criminal background checks, background checks for church volunteers and landlord background checks.
So I figured I would retouch those subjects briefly, to make sure everyone performing screening processes stays within the law.
Ask for Written Consent
When performing a background check, get written permission from the potential employee, volunteer or tenant you’re screening. With certain state agencies, you’ll need to provide proof of consent to acquire the documents you wish.
Even if that isn’t the policy of the agency, these people may call the subject of the background screening to let them know about this request. The same goes for background searches done by private companies that you pay for, so just remember to get written consent before you proceed.
That’s not a big thing, though. The people who refuse to sign written consent forms are either cranks, or they have something they want to hide. In either case, this probably isn’t someone you want working from you or renting from you.
Request a Complete Background Check Form
Before proceeding with the interview process, insist the subject of these screening reports fill out a complete form with up-to-date information. This is important, because with many agencies, you have to give correct information to receive a background report.
The information needed includes their full name, social security number, date of birth, current address, former addresses and maiden name, when applicable. Make sure the applicant provides a signature, affirming this information is correct.
Choose Correct Background Research
Select the scope of your background check. State agencies are only going to give you a criminal background check, but private background check websites and firms often have the option to provide criminal histories, educational background, a credit report and past employment.
As you might imagine, along with the increased scope, you’ll also be charged an increased fee. Only pay for the background screening check information you need.
Use Correct Payment Methods
When submitting payment for a background check, pay with acceptable payment methods to the agency, company or site you are using. Check on their website and see which payment options they suggest.
Screening Applicant Backgrounds
Background screening checks for applicants to rent or to fill a work position can be a real pain for the interviewer or hiring employee, but these are essential for a smooth running business or rental company. Going through this extra pain in screening applicants is going to make it easier to manage your business in the long run, or administer your rental properties. Screen applicants the right way and save yourself a lot of trouble later.
