How To Find People on Facebook

People of any age can learn to find people on Facebook. Unlike today’s younger generation, not everyone grew up with computers in their home, so if you became an adult before 1995 to 1998, your tech skills may or may not be inadequate to get online and search for people on the Internet. I was born into the last generation of people before computers, laptops and iPods were commonplace, everyday items, but social network applications like Facebook.com make it easy to locate and make contact with old friends.

I say all this because Facebook seems to be the social networking app for the crowd over 35. That’s because Facebooking makes it so easy to find old friends and network from there. Once you meet one or two acquaintances on their website, you’ll find it easy to have an ever-growing network of old friends and contacts.

This is how you can search for these people on Facebook.

Finding People on Facebook

First of all, register on Facebook. Remember to use an email and a Facebook identity that’s easy for old friends to recognize. If you’re name is “John Smith”, people aren’t going to know who you are if you use the Facebook identity “Pimp Daddy ’66″. So register using a recognizable identity.

Registration is simple and takes five minutes. If you want to be thorough, take 30 minutes to fill out a complete profile page, so all your old buddies know what you’re up to these days and what’s on your mind.

The important thing is, most of the best search functions on Facebook aren’t accessed until you have a Facebook identity, so definitely register. Another important factor is to put the correct region you’re in, so potential friends in your local area will be directed to you.

Search the Facebook Directory

Type in the name of the person you’re searching for in the Facebook search engine. For you old-timers out there, this is on the actual Facebook website and not that big clunky thing at the top of your computer screen called the toolbar.

Even at that, you’ll have a menu pop up that asks you whether you want to search for this name on Facebook or the web. Since you can perform Internet searches just as well off of Facebook, I suggest you click “Facebook” for our purposes here.

Click “Add Friend”

Once you perform a search, you’ll get a list of names. Click through the profiles of these people and find the friend you’re looking for. They should have information in their profile relating to where they went to school or graduated from, members of their family or other facts that should link them to the old days. Most will post pictures of themselves, so hopefully they still bear a resemblance to what they looked like 20 years ago.

Profile Search

If the original search doesn’t turn up your friend, click on the Profile Search link. Try to include all the correct and factual information you know about this person. The more information you provide, the more likely your profile search will locate the person you’re searching for.

Be Patient

Some of the information about a person won’t be available until after they approve you as a friend, so send a friend request and wait until they reply to check them out fully. Some people check their Facebook account several times a day. Some check Facebook once a week. Others check every few months or have a dead account. So be patient.

Import Friend Finder Contacts

You can add the Facebook accounts of your email contacts by using the Friend Finder tool on Facebook. This not only lets you add the friends you are already in contact with, but eventually see the network they have and see if there are any common friends you can contact.

Networking with People on Facebook

Use all of these methods and you’ll soon have a growing network of friends on Facebook. You will be able to post thoughts and comments on your life or carry on conversations via chat or email. You’ll also be able to read what’s going on in their lives. Quickly or slowly, you’ll be able to increase the size of your network and have a sizable list of online contacts, once you learn how to find people on Facebook.
